Despite a gawd awful 27 turnovers, Duke beat the snot out of #17 Syracuse on the road, 58-45. At one point the lead was 20. :D :happy-bouncyblue:
We CLOBBERED them on the glass. Syracuse came into the game as the 4th-best offensive rebounding team in the entire country, rebounding more than 40% of their own misses. Instead, we outscored them 18-2(!) in second-chance points. We had an almost incredible 52-25 advantage in total rebounds. That will erase a lot of mistakes! And there were many to be erased.

I'll happily take the win!

We held them to their lowest point total of the season, and that's including the 21 points they scored in the fourth quarter (which was more than they scored in the entire first half). Probably just as importantly, those 27 turnovers we had against Syracuse were whittled down to just 10 against NC State. We're a dangerous team when we hang onto the ball.

Duke's back to back victories over ranked teams vaults them from no votes to "27th" with 33 in the AP poll.
The Cheaterettes only have 5, State falls to 12th. (Which is less than I'd have thought.)

Turnovers killed us at the end. Overall, except for a really ugly 1st, we played a good game, but gave the ball away constantly at the end. Despite that, we were still in it. If we keep hold of the ball, we win by a few points.

Carolina can still go to Hell.

Duke will play their first tourney game Thursday night at 5 against the winner of Pitt/GT. Given that one of those will be our opponent, we should move on to Friday, where we'll face the Wuffies again. We split with them, losing by a lot in Raleigh and winning by a lot in Durham.

Any path we'd have in the ACC Tourney would be a dangerous one, so I'll take my chances with Wuffies, Part 3. But first things first. Let's see who makes it past Wednesday, and beat them. Then we can worry about State.

It's All-ACC awards time. Oluchi Okananwa is named the Sixth Player of the Year.
No Dukies on the First Team (which has 10 players?), but Richardson is on the second.
One of the best defensive teams in the entire country has no players on the ACC All Defensive team. :-\
Okananwa also makes the Freshman team.

Felisha Legette-Jack of Syracuse won COY.

DWBB picks up win #20, moving on to face the Wuffies in the quarterfinals tomorrow night.
They had way too many TOs as almost always, but otherwise played a really nice game and took the 70-58 victory. :happy-bouncyblue:

Also, Courtney Bangharts team was probably back in Chapel Hill by the time we won. :D :violin:

TOs were actually pretty reasonable at 12 until about the 8:00 mark in Q4. We had a 4:00 scoring drought that included about 6 TO, 4 fouls and a buncha misses and GT was able to cut a 15-17 point lead to 9 :-o . We ended up with 21A, 19 PF and 19 TO (might be off 1-2 on the assists).

Duke played a nice game, but some bad shooting and bad decisions gave State the game today.

Now we wait to find out where we'll head for our NCAA tourney journey.

It is, unfortunately, a long wait for the women. For reasons that escape me, even though the women finish a week before the men, they announce the women's bracket a few hours after they announce the men's. They start actual play one day later than the men, but finish one day earlier. I don't quite get it, but it ain't up to me.

Absolutely brutal selection for Duke. We're off as a 7 to play 10 seed Richmond. Assuming we get past them, we then will likely be saying hi to Celeste Taylor and two seed Ohio State on their home court.

IF we get out of the weekend, we also have #1 USC, #3 UCONN, #4 VT, and #6 Syracuse all in our bracket.

VT without Kitley is not something I would worry about. But potentially facing 2, 3, and 1 in consecutive games is brutal. There's just a huge difference between a 7 seed and a 6 this year, and we couldn't get ourselves on the right side of that line. Our defense is really good though. We have at least a fighting chance of making the Sweet Sixteen, if we stay really focused. But yeah, at some point in that murderer's row we're going to slip up.

Duke Hall of Famer and Miami head coach Katie Meier is calling it a career.
Katie Meier, who led the Miami women's basketball team to 10 NCAA tournaments and guided the Hurricanes to the Elite Eight last season, announced her retirement from coaching Thursday.

I remember her being approached when G left for Texas; it was a mild surprise to many that she didn't come to Duke.

That's a big surprise, but if she's ready now, better to go than hang on while it's painful. I'm sure she's not short of retirement funds.

In today's environment, with NIL and the portal insanity, I'm sure the joys of coaching are disappearing for quite a few.

Duke survived a horrendous 2nd quarter (scored 5 points) to overcome Richmond 72-61 and advance to face Celeste Taylor and Ohio State on Sunday.
